Para ser técnico de central hidroeléctrica se necesita una titulación. Para cursar los estudios o la formación de este trabajo se necesita el NCEA Level 3. Requisitos: una titulación de educación superior pertinente en manufactura, ingeniería y tecnología, ingeniería mecánica e industrial, ingeniería eléctrica y electrónica o un área similar. Otros requisitos: un New Zealand Certificate in Energy and Chemical Process Operations (nivel 3); un New Zealand Certificate in Energy and Chemical Field Operations (nivel 4); un New Zealand Certificate in Electricity Supply (Operation) (nivel 4); un diploma avanzado en ingeniería eléctrica, ingeniería mecánica o un área similar; experiencia en un trabajo similar.
