Para ser mecánico de líneas eléctricas se necesita hacer un programa de aprendizaje. Para cursar los estudios o la formación de este trabajo por lo general se necesita el NCEA Level 2. Requisitos: hacer un programa de aprendizaje en instalación y mantenimiento de líneas eléctricas y obtener un New Zealand Certificate in Electricity Supply (Line Mechanic Distribution) (nivel 4) O un New Zealand Certificate in Electricity Supply (Transmission Line Maintenance) (nivel 4); un New Zealand Certificate in Electricity Supply (Introductory); un Trainee Limited Certificate del Electrical Workers Registration Board.
