遺伝カウンセラーになるには複数の資格が必要である。この仕事のための学習や訓練を受けるには、University Entranceが必要である。必須：遺伝学の学士号、シドニー工科大学またはメルボルン大学の遺伝カウンセリング修士、オーストラレーシア遺伝カウンセラー協会の認定を受けること、オーストラレーシア遺伝カウンセラー協会の会員であること。その他の要件：オーストラレーシア人類遺伝学会のフェローであること。登録機関：オーストラレーシア遺伝カウンセラー協会（Australasian Society of Genetic Counsellors）。
