How to become an Autonomous Driving Engineer
Designs, develops and tests self-driving systems for cars that drive on public roads.
Main tasks
- Working out the specifications of the self-driving system to be built
- Doing the basic design of the self-driving system
- Doing the detailed design of the self-driving system
- Designing the self-driving system using CAD
- Simulating how the self-driving system works on a computer
- Building prototypes of the self-driving system and checking how they work
- Finding the cause of any problems with the self-driving system and working out solutions
- Feeding training data (existing data with known results) into AI so it can learn
- Making necessary changes based on checks of the learning results
- Applying what the AI has learned to rule-based control
- Reviewing the self-driving system with the designers of the whole car
- Changing the design of the self-driving system as needed
- Checking how the whole car works using computer simulation
- Driving real cars (test vehicles and prototypes) on test tracks to check how they work
- Driving real cars (test vehicles and prototypes) on public roads to check how they work
- Finding the cause of any problems with test vehicles or prototypes and working out solutions
- Getting internal reviews at each stage of development, setting the company's direction and keeping records
- Holding meetings within the development team
- Sharing information electronically within the development team
- Meeting suppliers
- Explaining the self-driving systems developed at trade shows
- Reading related papers and articles
Workers in this job say university or high school is common. From job tag's survey of people in each job, who could give several answers. It shows what workers see as common, not how many workers hold each level.
How to become one
No particular education or qualifications are needed, but most new graduates entering the job have a master's degree in engineering, science or a similar field. Mid-career hires often come from electronics makers and telecommunications companies with technology the car company lacks, and some move from other car makers or tier 1 suppliers. New graduates are hired as development engineers by car makers or tier 1 suppliers, train for a few months to half a year, and some of that year's intake of engineers are placed in the self-driving development department. Mid-career hires are expected to contribute straight away. With experience you are given larger development work and eventually a whole development project. You are expected to master design software, simulation software, AI development software and so on, but you learn these through training and on the job after joining. There is a lot of joint work with overseas suppliers, so you need to read and speak English. Documents in Chinese or German are sometimes needed for development too. You must be able to read and understand reports, manuals, design standards, specifications and laws. Mistakes can lead to development delays or accidents, so development is organised to prevent errors, but you also need to be careful yourself. Development is done in teams of several to dozens of people and involves working with suppliers, so above all you need communication skills. The knowledge and skills needed can be learned later. Research and development on self-driving is very active around the world, so it is important to gather the latest information and take a strong interest in new technology and equipment.

- University: Engineering degrees, Offered by 95 universities in Japan
- Vocational college, junior college, kosen and trade skills tests: College of technology (高等専門学校, kosen). 10% of workers surveyed by job tag say college of technology graduates are common in this job. In March 2025, 421 kosen graduates started work in manufacturing engineering (development) (School Basic Survey 2025, table 109).

- Average annual income: ¥7,253,500 Private sector only: employers with 10 or more staff. Public servants, such as public school teachers and police officers, are not in these figures.
- Monthly base pay (before overtime and bonus): median ¥367,400, and the middle half earn ¥293,600 to ¥456,300 a month.
- Pay measured for the wage survey group: Transportation equipment engineers
- 1.93 job openings per applicant at Hello Work (2025). A current demand signal, not a projection. It counts only the jobs and job seekers registered at Hello Work, Japan's public employment offices, and many graduate and professional hires never pass through it.
