How to become one
Most people join a bank after graduating from university and become a branch manager after promotions within the bank. No particular qualifications are needed to start, but knowledge of economics, finance and accounting is an advantage. After joining, depending on the bank, work-related qualifications such as bookkeeping, life insurance agent and financial planner are required or recommended for the job or for promotion. At the large city banks, most new staff are placed in branches around the country after training and learn banking on the job. They then usually work as head office staff, branch section head and deputy branch manager before becoming a branch manager. The time this takes varies, but some people become branch managers in their thirties. Some branch managers go on to become executives at head office. You need to understand customers' needs accurately and gather information, make judgements and take action to run the branch in a way that suits the local area. Explaining your thinking to staff and leading the branch to carry out its plans also make communication skills and leadership important.
