How to become a Bartender
Makes cocktails and serves other drinks to customers' orders at the counter of bars and pubs.
Main tasks
- Preparing ice and drink ingredients
- Making cocktails to set recipes when customers order them
- Shaking a cocktail shaker to blend and chill the ingredients and pouring the drink into a glass
- Adjusting how drinks are made to suit customers' tastes
- Chatting with and looking after customers to make them welcome
- Managing customer information, for example for bottles kept for regulars
- Preparing snacks such as hors d'oeuvres and fruit
- Buying the alcohol and food needed
- Working out prices
- Doing the accounts
- Watching other staff's work and helping where needed
- Managing staff working hours and health
- Hiring bar staff
- Cleaning and disinfecting the floor and kitchen
- Washing glasses, plates and utensils and putting them back in place
- Planning and running events
- Doing sales and promotion to bring in more customers
- Creating original drinks

How to become one
No particular education or qualifications are needed to start. To become a bartender, you can study bartending at a vocational school and then find a job, join a hotel and move into bartending after doing various jobs, or gain experience while working at a bar. It takes a certain amount of experience to become a fully skilled bartender. At vocational schools you learn the knowledge bartenders need and practical skills such as shaking. There are qualifications such as the bartender skills certification exam recognised by the Nippon Bartenders Association. Some people aim to win prizes at skills competitions and cocktail contests. One goal for many bartenders is to open their own bar.
