How to become a Boiler Operator
Also called: Boiler technician
Operates boilers to produce steam and hot water for air conditioning, in-house power generation turbines and factory heating and warming equipment.
Main tasks
- Maintaining and managing boilers so they always run properly
- Setting the sequence controls for automatic boiler control
- Managing the temperature inside buildings
- Supplying water to boilers
- Feeding fuel to boilers and burning it to supply hot water or steam to building heating systems
- Monitoring how boilers are running using gauges and visual checks
- Monitoring the fuel supply
- Managing boiler water quality
- Adjusting the amount of combustion air fed to boilers
- Operating control valves to adjust the temperature and pressure of hot water and steam
- Monitoring and maintaining steam turbine generators and heating sources
- Maintaining wastewater treatment
- Shutting down boilers after work and closing the valves supplying steam to equipment
- Checking and recording how much stored fuel is left
- Disposing of combustion residue
- Stopping boilers manually when something goes wrong to prevent injury and damage to boilers and other equipment
- Repairing faults or damage found in boilers, or ordering repairs
- Rotating the use of several boilers

How to become one
To work as a boiler operator you need a qualification set by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, which depends on the size of the boilers handled. There are no education or age requirements to sit the second-class boiler technician licence exam, but people under 18 cannot receive the licence. Holders of the second-class licence can sit the first-class exam, and holders of the first-class licence can sit the special-class exam.
