How to become one
Few school leavers are hired. Almost all staff join mid-career, and many are middle-aged and older men. No particular qualifications or experience are needed, but a driving licence is often required. You need to work briskly so customers do not have to wait and to guide vehicles safely and reliably. When you first start, an experienced attendant usually works beside you for about two weeks while you learn to handle arrivals, guiding, machine operation and other tasks on the job, and then you are left to do the work yourself. As well as being employed directly by car park owners, people are employed by car park management or building maintenance companies. They may then be sent to work at car parks attached to supermarkets, department stores, hotels, amusement parks and office buildings, or at public car parks.
