How to become one
No particular education or qualifications are needed to start. You can join a building firm or become an apprentice to a master carpenter (toryo), or complete set training at a public vocational training school or a company training school and then join an employer. Carpenters need the drive and dexterity to carry on traditional skills while meeting new demands in house building, as well as physical strength. However, power tools and other machinery are reducing the physical strain of the work. Once your skills and leadership have grown, you can set up on your own. Running a building firm calls for the knowledge and leadership to manage schedules, quality and costs. To design and manage the building of larger timber houses you need the second-class kenchikushi (licensed architect) or wooden building architect qualification, and many master carpenters hold one of these.
