How to become one

To work as a crane operator you must be 18 or over and hold the licence (a national qualification) for the type of crane or mobile crane you operate, or have completed operation skills training or special training according to lifting capacity and other categories. As well as new graduates, many are hired mid-career. Most new graduates are high school leavers who are hired by factories or warehouses of manufacturers or similar, or by construction companies, and then assigned to crane operation. Some are assigned after working in other jobs in the company. No experience or qualifications are asked for when you join, and almost everyone gains licences and qualifications after being assigned. After that you get used to the work on the job. By sharpening your skills and gaining experience you may be promoted to team leader, subsection chief or section manager. Mid-career, people without crane experience are sometimes hired, and in that case, like new graduates, they gain licences and qualifications after joining. To work as a crane operator you need to learn how cranes work and how to maintain and check them, and if you sling loads you must complete slinging skills training or similar. You also need to watch your surroundings carefully and anticipate danger, work calmly and carefully, and stay focused and alert. With large cranes, the cab is far from the tip of the crane, so good eyesight and a good sense of distance are useful. In recent years, advances in digital control and automation have made operation more accurate, efficient and safe, and operators are expected to build their skills to match.
