How to become a Demolition Worker
Also called: Building demolition worker, House demolition worker, Concrete breaker, Wrecker
Pulls down existing buildings and structures with tools and machines (demolition work) and sorts certain building materials.
Main tasks
- Inspecting buildings to be demolished and deciding the method and steps
- Surveying the ground and anything buried in it
- Submitting demolition notices to the local council under the Construction Material Recycling Act
- Putting measures in place to control vibration and dust
- Removing rubbish and other items left inside and around the building before demolition
- Putting up scaffolding and covering the building with sheeting
- Spraying water during demolition to stop dust spreading
- Wrapping ropes around roofs and pulling them down
- Operating welding machines and power saws to cut through reinforcing bars
- Operating power saws and heavy machinery to break down wooden posts and walls
- Operating heavy machinery to break up concrete
- Breaking things up by hand with crowbars and hammers
- Removing asbestos
- Removing dioxins
- Operating mowers to cut weeds
- Sorting and collecting reusable steel, timber, stone and bricks
- Carting away rubble by truck
- Issuing and managing waste tracking forms
- Removing heavy objects in tight spaces where heavy machinery cannot be used
- Buying and managing stock of tools and scaffolding needed for demolition

How to become one
No particular qualifications or education are needed to start, but it is helpful to have an ordinary driving licence. People also join mid-career. After joining, you learn the steps of the work on the job and, while building experience, you can widen the range of work you do by attending courses such as gas welding, excavation, scaffolding assembly, steel erection and demolition of concrete structures, and gaining related qualifications as needed. It takes about three to five years to become fully skilled. As a rule, anyone with at least eight years of demolition work experience can sit the exam for certified demolition works engineer, and passing it marks you as a demolition specialist. The work involves danger, so accuracy and attentiveness are needed.
