How to become one
No qualifications or education are required, and you can start without experience. Beginners usually start working in the treatment room while learning the basics, such as the names of instruments, equipment and materials and how treatment runs, by watching experienced dental assistants and dental hygienists. Some knowledge of dental treatment and medical office work makes the job easier, so some people take dental assistant courses at a senmon gakko (vocational college) or similar, or medical office courses. There is also a dental assistant certification scheme (Class A, Class B first grade and Class B second grade), with standards set by the Japan Dental Association and courses run by prefectural dental associations. With experience you can work more efficiently, but in treatment a dental assistant can only support dentists and dental hygienists, so some people gain the national dental hygienist qualification to widen what they can do. To become a dental hygienist you must graduate from a training school (courses of at least 3 years), pass the national exam and get a licence. Dental assistants assist with medical procedures, so you need attention and care to follow the dentist's instructions and avoid mistakes in procedures. You often handle the dental unit and equipment, and infection control is important, so you need to be aware of safety and hygiene. You also deal with patients often, so communication skills matter.
