How to become a Dental Hygienist
Works under a dentist's direct supervision to prevent diseases of the teeth and gums such as tooth decay and gum disease, assists the dentist with treatment and gives dental health guidance.
Main tasks
- Handling reception, payments and insurance billing at a dental clinic
- Asking patients simple questions before treatment
- Removing tartar, deposits and stains from the teeth and gums with dental instruments
- Checking for gum pockets and signs of gum disease using dental products
- Sealing the grooves on the surface of children's adult teeth to prevent decay
- Applying fluoride and other decay-preventing agents to stop teeth decaying
- Preparing the dental chair and managing the materials and medicines the dentist uses
- Operating dental equipment as the dentist directs
- Mixing impression putty and fitting and removing impressions and temporary fillings
- Recording the state of the mouth and the treatment given in the patient's records during the dentist's examination and treatment
- Disinfecting dental equipment
- Teaching patients about oral hygiene and explaining what to do at home
- Assisting at check-ups for babies and young children and advising mothers
- Teaching tooth brushing at schools to improve children's oral hygiene and prevent decay
- Giving oral care during home visits and at aged care facilities and telling families and staff how things are
- Supporting orthodontic treatment
- Repairing false teeth
- Spotting signs of neglect from the state of a child's mouth and reporting it to the local council or child guidance centre
- Making various applications to government on patients' behalf
- Preparing documents for home dental hygiene guidance and home care management
- Cleaning and disinfecting the clinic and keeping it in good order

How to become one
You need to graduate from a dental hygienist training institution, pass the national dental hygienist exam and get a licence. Training courses last three years or more. The curriculum covers general education subjects, basic specialist subjects such as anatomy and oral health, and specialist subjects including clinical placements. Dental hygienists need an interest in and knowledge of medicine, especially dentistry, and the fine skills to remove deposits from teeth and apply medicines in the mouth.
