How to become a Forging Worker
Also called: Die forger, Open-die forger, Forging furnace operator, Forging equipment operator, Forging press operator
Shapes heated or room-temperature steel, aluminium, stainless steel and other metals under pressure with forging machines to make forged products.

How to become one
No particular education or qualification is required to start. People usually go into this job straight after finishing high school or similar. There is also mid-career recruitment from other jobs. New school leavers usually find jobs through their school or Hello Work (public employment service), and mid-career hires through Hello Work and job advertisements. After joining, you start with support tasks and gradually take on harder work. Learning forging skills takes several years of experience. Hammer work in die forging is highly skilled and takes more than 10 years to master. Forging equipment operators also learn the work on the job. A related qualification is the forging technician grade of the ginou kentei (national trade skills test) set by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, which is valued as proof of skill. The work involves repeatedly lifting and moving items, so a fair amount of physical strength is needed. It is important to understand the basics of the work well and pay attention to safety. Care, quickness, accuracy and good hand skills are needed.
