How to become one
Having the health information manager qualification helps you get a job. You can gain it by graduating from a university or senmon gakko (vocational college) designated by the Japan Hospital Association, or by taking the association's distance learning course, and then passing its certification exam. You work directly with professionals such as doctors, nurses, pharmacists and laboratory technologists in hospital, so as well as office skills you need the medical knowledge to understand medical records and the ability to analyse and interpret the information drawn from them. Also important are the reading skills to understand records, the care to check documents for gaps, accuracy in organising and storing records, the cooperation to win the help of doctors and nurses, and a sense of responsibility in managing information. You must also keep studying to keep up with advances in medicine and related technology, and be able to understand records correctly even when they mix English and medical terms. The level of health information management in Japan's hospitals varies widely depending on their size and who runs them. However, to meet the needs of more advanced medicine and the social responsibilities of medical institutions, opportunities to build specialist skills after qualifying are growing, and certification of health information manager instructors is also under way.
