How to become one
No particular education or qualification is required to start. People usually join an electrical maker, a retailer or an appliance repair company after finishing school. Having completed a course in electrical, electronic or mechanical engineering or information technology is an advantage. After joining, you are trained for a set period, in group sessions and on the job, in how appliances work and how to handle, adjust and maintain them. With experience, some become specialist technicians in technical training departments, or managers at service centres who manage and teach repair skills. Holding the electrician qualification widens the range of work you can do. There is also the home appliance engineer qualification run by an industry body. In general, rapid progress in electronics has made appliances more powerful and multi-functional, with denser and smaller circuits. To keep up with these changes, you need to keep taking in the latest technology and learning new and deeper technical knowledge to improve your skills. You also often deal directly with customers, so as well as technical skills, customer service and communication skills are important. The job involves patiently finding and fixing the cause of faults, so calm judgement and patience are needed. You spend a lot of time out on visits, so a fair amount of physical strength is needed.
