How to become a House Cleaner
Also called: Domestic cleaner, Rental property cleaner
Cleans houses and household fixtures and fittings, mainly in empty or occupied apartments and detached houses.
Main tasks
- Visiting sites in advance when a job comes in
- Preparing quotes based on the customer's wishes and the site visit
- Agreeing the cleaning content and schedule with the customer
- Preparing the tools, equipment and detergents needed
- Driving a work vehicle to the site
- Covering and protecting the areas around where you will work
- Cleaning all or part of the house with specialist tools and detergents
- Cleaning appliances and fittings with specialist tools and detergents
- Removing the protective covers and tidying up when the job is finished
- Inspecting the site to check nothing has been missed
- Billing customers and collecting payment
- Following up with customers to check they were happy and suggesting regular cleaning

How to become one
No particular education or qualification is required to start. After joining, you learn the basic knowledge and skills of house cleaning and build experience on the job. You drive to customers' homes, so a standard car licence is an advantage. A related qualification is the 'house cleaning skills' certificate under the ginou kentei (national trade skills test) set by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. Basic knowledge of detergent ingredients and how to use them is important. People with knowledge and skills in related fields such as electricity and chemistry are also in demand. You often work inside customers' homes, so you need to be trustworthy and well mannered and communicate smoothly with customers.
