How to become an IT Project Manager
Also called: Project manager (system development), Project manager (application software development), Project manager (information processing)
Leads project teams developing IT systems, drawing up project plans and managing budgets, staff and progress.
Main tasks
- Analysing the flow and volume of information where the system will be used
- Making clear what system the client needs (requirements definition)
- Proposing a system development plan to the client based on what they want
- Drawing up a project plan, including schedule, staff, team structure and budget, based on the development plan
- Getting the people and resources needed for the project
- Managing progress and costs to keep the project running smoothly
- Spotting problems and likely future issues early and taking the right action
- Checking that the delivered system works as intended (acceptance testing)
- Explaining the system to the client and training their staff
- Preparing manuals and documents for the system
- Planning maintenance and operations once the system is running
- Analysing and evaluating the original plan against the results after the project ends, to help future projects
- Designing core infrastructure systems
- Managing system security
- Handling service outages during system migration
- Hiring and developing staff
- Guiding systems engineers and programmers
- Balancing the views of the client and project members

Ways to prove these abilities include the Project Manager Examination run by the Information-technology Promotion Agency (IPA) and the PMP (Project Management Professional) certification run by the US non-profit PMI.
