No particular education or qualification is required to start, but many people join after finishing a technical high school, a senmon gakko (vocational college) in electrical, electronic, mechanical or information subjects, or a university. Many companies hire new graduates on a planned basis. Recruitment is generally through schools and Hello Work (public employment service). There is also mid-career recruitment, through Hello Work and job advertisements. In workplaces that handle radiation, the national qualifications of X-ray work chief or second-class radiation protection supervisor are needed, but people usually get the chance to sit these after in-house training once they have joined. With these qualifications you can also work in installation and maintenance in hospitals and clinics. Each workplace provides training after you join. Medical equipment ranges from portable devices such as ultrasound scanners to large machines such as MRI scanners and particle therapy systems, and assembly work ranges from simple tasks to work needing advanced skills. As well as basic engineering knowledge, you need knowledge of the standards (international, Japanese and industry) that apply to different medical devices.
