How to become a Pattern Maker

Makes the paper patterns (the blueprints for making clothes) from a designer's ideas and design drawings.

How to become one

No particular education or qualification is required to start, but people usually learn the basics of pattern making at a fashion senmon gakko (vocational college), university or tanki daigaku (junior college) and then join an apparel company or similar. As well as the basic skills learned at school, you need to learn each company's own pattern style, so it takes several years of experience to become fully skilled. Once you have enough experience and skill, you can use it anywhere, which is a strength: some go freelance or work exclusively for a famous designer. A related qualification is the womenswear and childrenswear manufacturing technician grade (ready-to-wear pattern making) of the ginou kentei (national trade skills test) set by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. Making patterns that take into account how soft and thick a fabric is takes a lot of experience, skill and fashion sense. As well as pattern design skills, sewing skills are also needed. You need to love making clothes and have a feel for fashion and trends, and because a few millimetres out can cause problems in production, you also need to be meticulous and able to concentrate.
