How to become one
No education or qualifications are required. Even beginners can do the work by following a manual, but basic IT knowledge and experience of using a PC make it easier. Some organisations set up their own devices with their own staff and others outsource it. Ordinary companies rarely hire and train staff just for kitting, and outsourcing is increasing. Because the work is concentrated at certain times of year, companies that take on the work often use agency staff, and many kitting jobs are advertised as agency work. At IT companies where staff do kitting in-house, it is sometimes given to new staff as a way into departments such as operations or development. IT companies that do kitting as a business may train beginners in the basics of digital technology or have senior team members support them. The basic way to build skills is to get used to the work by following the manual provided for each job. By gaining experience and the knowledge and skills to handle complex settings and problems, learning the basics of IT through qualifications such as the IT Passport (Information-technology Promotion Agency), and building more advanced skills, you can become a team leader or move into specialist work such as help desk or user support. Kitting means doing detailed tasks accurately following set steps and repeating the same work for every device. You need patience and concentration to work quietly and carefully without straying from the manual. It is also important to stay calm when unexpected problems arise, understand the situation and consult your leader.
