How to become one

No particular qualification is required to start, but most pharmaceutical researchers study up to postgraduate level in a university faculty of pharmacy, science, veterinary science or agriculture and then join a drug company, cosmetics maker or national research institute. After joining, researchers often work in fields beyond what they studied at university, so they can build knowledge of drug discovery while using their own specialism. Because the work involves radioisotopes and hazardous substances, related qualifications such as radiation protection supervisor and poisonous and deleterious substances manager are needed, but these are usually gained after joining. Staff may be transferred to departments outside research, such as planning, patents or product information. Depending on their research record, some move to universities or start drug development companies. Language skills, especially English, are essential for keeping up with the latest knowledge and exchanging information with other countries. Research often takes many years, so you need lasting curiosity.
