How to become a Plastics Moulding Worker
Also called: Compression moulder, Injection moulder, Plastics extrusion worker, Laminate moulder, Thermoformer, Foam moulder, Blow moulder, Plastics moulding equipment operator
Heats plastic and shapes it in moulding machines to make all kinds of products.
Main tasks
- Choosing plastic materials for making prototypes
- Making prototypes, finding faults and working out the settings needed for mass production
- Placing and fixing moulds and other fittings on the press bed of the moulding machine and connecting the supply lines
- Fitting dies to the machine, or compressing die skins and coating them with release agent
- Checking specifications to decide moulding settings such as temperature, pressure and injection speed of the melted material
- Entering moulding settings into the machine and adjusting them in trial runs so products meet the specifications
- Mixing catalysts, thermoplastics and colourings with spatulas and mixers according to the formula
- Topping up material in continuously running moulding machines
- Operating moulding machines and monitoring and adjusting how they run
- Removing finished pieces from dies and moulds with hand tools and air hoses
- Measuring surface and size defects in products with measuring instruments
- Trimming excess material from parts with a knife
- Counting products by weight and packing them into bags or boxes
- Grinding scrap plastic into powder so it can be reused
- Programming moulding robots
- Maintaining and inspecting machines and attached equipment

How to become one
No particular education or qualifications are needed to start, but knowledge of machinery, electricity or chemistry is an advantage. People also join mid-career. It takes several years of experience to learn how moulding machines work, the types of material and how to handle moulds, so that you can set up the machines yourself and make a range of products. Related qualifications include the plastics moulding exam in the ginou kentei (national trade skills test) run by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. Materials, machines and moulding technology are changing quickly, so you need to keep improving your skills, for example by learning from senior staff and keeping up with new information.
