How to become a Pottery and Ceramics Maker
Also called: Tile maker, Ceramics polisher, Kiln worker, Ceramics moulder, Roof tile equipment operator, Ceramics production equipment operator, Ceramic raw materials equipment operator, Crucible production equipment operator
Makes pottery and ceramic products, from tableware such as bowls and plates to everyday items such as tiles, washbasins and toilets.
Main tasks
- Mixing clay with feldspar and quartz to make the clay body
- Placing a ball of clay in the centre of the potter's wheel
- Turning the wheel by motor or by hand to shape the clay
- Adjusting the wheel speed while feeling how the clay's firmness changes
- Smoothing the surface of finished pieces with a rubber rib and a damp sponge
- Passing a wire between the base of the piece and the wheel to cut it off
- Checking size and shape with callipers and templates
- Drying pieces and then giving them a first (bisque) firing
- Sanding rough spots and the foot ring smooth after firing
- Mixing glazes, for example by blending in ash
- Applying glaze to bisque-fired pieces and firing them at high temperature
- Painting overglaze colours on high-fired ceramics and firing them again at low temperature
- Checking products by eye or machine and sorting out faulty ones
- Wrapping, packing and sending out finished products
- Making moulds from plaster
- Inspecting and servicing production machinery
- Repairing broken production machinery
- Buying and managing raw materials
- Planning and developing new products
- Designing products
- Selling products at stalls and exhibitions
