How to become a Press Photographer

Takes photos at the scenes of incidents, accidents, disasters and other events for newspapers, magazines, websites and other media.

How to become one

No particular education or qualification is required to start, but many people have studied photography at university, a senmon gakko (vocational college) or similar. At arts universities, you learn not just photography skills but also the history of photography, optics and digital processing, expressive skills such as art and colour, and specialist knowledge of journalism and newspapers. At photography senmon gakko, teaching focuses on shooting skills, given by instructors such as experienced working photographers. After graduating, people either join a newspaper or news agency, or gain experience as assistants to photographers or photo studios, and become fully skilled. Digital single-lens reflex cameras are now the main equipment, so you also need skills in processing photos digitally on computers after shooting. Photographers working for newspapers and similar usually use their employer's cameras and equipment, but freelancers must provide their own cameras, lenses and lighting such as flash units. You need an interest in current affairs, insight into your specialist field, passion, curiosity and a fair amount of physical strength. As well as taking photos, you sometimes write the text published as articles. When reporting overseas, foreign languages are often needed to arrange interviews and negotiate permission to take photos.

How do I become a Press Photographer?
