How to become a Reinforcing Ironworker
Also called: Building reinforcing ironworker, Civil works reinforcing ironworker
Cuts, bends and assembles the cage of steel reinforcing bars that forms the frame of reinforced concrete structures.
Main tasks
- Drawing up a bar schedule from the plans showing the diameter, length and number of bars needed
- Operating hacksaws, bar cutters and oxy-acetylene torches to cut bars to set lengths
- Operating bar benders to bend reinforcing bars
- Welding reinforcing bars with welding equipment
- Operating cranes and heavy machinery to bring cut and bent bars onto site
- Assembling bars according to the plans and tying them with tie wire and pliers
- Spraying reinforcing bars with anti-rust coating
