How to become one
No particular education or qualification is required to start. After being hired as an operator and going through group training, you are placed in a production stage such as ironmaking, steelmaking or rolling, taking your own wishes into account. Placement policies, such as whether you rotate between stages, differ by company. You build knowledge and skills through new-employee training, planned education and training, and day-to-day guidance from supervisors and senior staff in your workplace. It is said that around 10 years of experience is needed to work fully on your own as an operator. Because of this, some steelmakers run in-house training for each level and year of service after induction (for example, training in the 3rd, 6th and 10th years). Depending on your work, you may need a crane operator licence or the hazardous materials handler or slinging qualification. Blast furnace steelmakers and others also send young and mid-level employees as working students to the College of Industrial Technology, a tanki daigaku (junior college) founded at the initiative of the Japan Iron and Steel Federation. Steelmaking skills take a long time to master and are often closely tied to particular equipment, so you broaden your skills by doing different jobs and move up to positions needing higher skills according to your ability and experience. A typical career path is operator, then team leader (who runs operations while leading the operators in the workplace), then foreman or supervisor (who does not run operations but manages the shop floor), then general manager or section manager (who deals with office staff and oversees the foremen). To operate machines you first need knowledge. For example, to operate a rolling mill you need mechanical and electrical knowledge to understand how the mill is built and works, and metallurgical knowledge to understand how the steel's properties change as it is rolled. At the same time, you need operating skills to run all the equipment accurately, safely and smoothly. With increasing automation, knowledge of control systems is now also needed. You must respond to the readings on gauges and operate levers and buttons correctly, so accurate perception, judgement and quick reactions are needed. As machines grow larger and more automated, much of the work involves watching sensor data on monitors and operating remotely, while also judging the process directly by eye, so concentration and attention are needed.
