How to become one
No particular education or qualification is required to start, but many people have studied computing at university, senmon gakko (vocational college), kosen (college of technology) or similar. Some are interested enough to teach themselves the skills while still students. New graduates learn development skills through classroom study and on-the-job training. Once you can handle requirements definition, basic design, detailed design, development and support after launch, you can not only build a web service on your own but also use those skills when developing as a team. Some young working people move into the job after vocational training. Experienced people with a track record are also hired mid-career. Languages such as PHP, JavaScript and Ruby are often used for programming web services. Website development also needs knowledge of Linux (a server operating system), Apache (which provides website functions), databases such as MySQL and PostgreSQL, and programming languages. Knowledge of security is also important in development today. Some detailed and up-to-date information on development is in Japanese, but some can only be found on English-language websites and in English-speaking communities. So the ability to read and write English is needed for development. New features appear in web services every day, and development technology moves forward rapidly. You need the drive to keep gathering information and sharpening your skills as you work.
