How to become a Technical Illustrator

Creates detailed 3D drawings of products and parts, instead of drawings or photos, to show visually how to operate industrial products in instruction manuals and similar documents.

How to become one

No particular education or qualification is required to start, but knowledge of industrial technology, for example from a design or engineering university or high school, or a senmon gakko (vocational college) for technical illustration, is an advantage. New graduates often join through introductions from their school. Mid-career hiring usually looks for experienced people. People join manufacturers or companies that produce manuals and learn to read design and production drawings, the basics of technical drawing and computer skills. As they gain experience and sharpen their artistic sense, they are gradually given more complex work. Some go independent as freelancers. A related qualification is the technical illustration technician grade of the ginou kentei (national trade skills test) set by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. It is not essential for the work, but holding it is proof of ability. As well as drawing skills, you need the spatial ability to picture complex 3D shapes from drawings and imagine how they move.
