How to become a Welder
Also called: Metal welding equipment operator, Metal cutting equipment operator, Welding robot operator
Joins metal materials together using heat (welding).
Main tasks
- Fitting a welding rod to the welding torch and adjusting the welding current and voltage
- Fitting a welding rod to the welding torch and touching it to the metals being joined
- Moving the welding torch by hand along the joint line while the rod and metal are melted (rod handling)
- Replacing welding rods once they have melted down
- Welding with coiled wire fed into the welding torch instead of a rod
- Testing welds for flaws by pulling or bending them (destructive testing)
- Checking welds for hidden flaws with radiation or ultrasound (non-destructive testing)
- Setting up, feeding and monitoring automatic welding machines and welding robots
- Gas welding stainless steel, iron, aluminium and brass
- Cleaning torch nozzles
- Operating cranes while keeping watch on the surroundings

How to become one

There are also welder and welding instructor qualifications certified by industry bodies. To be responsible for design or quality control for factory certification or government construction contracts, you need to be a certified welding engineer. The work generally involves making heavy items, with bending and standing, so physical strength is needed. The patience to keep working calmly is also important. Skilful arm movements and good eyesight are needed, especially for rod handling.
