Cardiac technicians carry out tests that help cardiologists and physiologists diagnose and treat patients with heart and respiratory problems.
Main tasks
- Operate medical instruments and equipment
- Test patient heart and lung functioning
- Monitor and diagnose health conditions
- Perform electrocardiograms (ECGs) and other medical tests
- Fit medical devices into patients
- Prepare patients for medical procedures
- Maintain sterile work areas and equipment
- Collect medical information from patients and whānau
How to become one
You need more than one qualification and experience to become a cardiac technician. You need University Entrance to do the study or training for this job. Required: a relevant tertiary qualification in biological sciences, medical studies or similar area; a Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Technology; a Certificate in Physiological Measurement or a Certification of Cardiac Physiologists from the Society of Cardiopulmonary Technology (NZ); 1 to 2 years’ experience as a trainee cardiac technician. Registration body: Clinical Physiologists Registration Board.
