Crematory operators provide cremation services for funeral homes and crematoriums. They may prepare bodies for cremation and maintain crematory equipment.
Main tasks
- Operate cremation equipment
- Prepare the deceased for cremation
- Monitor and adjust cremation temperatures
- Handle caskets with care and respect
- Explain services to families
- Clean and maintain equipment
- Keep work areas clean and safe
- Keep accurate cremation records
How to become one
You usually learn on the job to become a crematory operator. You usually don’t need specific NCEA levels for this job. Other requirements: experience in similar work; a driver licence.
Pay
- Median pay: $78,312 a year, a TEC estimate before tax.
- Upper: $108,797 a year
