How to become a land surveyor
Official title: Land surveyor
Also called: Cadastral surveyor, Geodetic surveyor, Topographical surveyor, Cadastral surveyor, Geodetic surveyor, Topographical surveyor
Land surveyor specialises in surveying land surfaces to determine boundaries and exact locations, delineates topographic features and man-made structures and otherwise measure land areas for such purposes as mapmaking and construction work. He/she creates detailed drawings and administers project survey data along with maintaining and servicing of survey instruments.
Main tasks
- Surveying, measuring and describing land surfaces, mines, underground surfaces, sea, river and lake beds
- Noting exact position of various features and recording survey data in digital form
- Planning and conducting aerial photographic surveys
- Designing, compiling and revising maps and charts using aerial and other photographs, satellite imagery, survey documents and data, existing maps and records, reports and statistics
- Undertaking research and development of surveying and photogrammetric measurement systems, cadastral systems and land information systems
- Studying and advising on technical, aesthetic and economic aspects of map production
- Maintaining technical liaison and consultancy with other relevant specialists

- Licence or registration: Cadastral survey work, which fixes legal land boundaries and titles, may only be done by a surveyor registered with the Land Surveyors Board who holds a practising certificate renewed each year.
