How to become a Flight Radio Operator
Official Chinese title (2022 occupational classification): 飞行通信员
Uses the aircraft's communications equipment to keep the aircraft in contact with the ground.
Main tasks
- Collecting and checking communications information, reading notices to airmen and temporary rules and planning communications for the route and task; on international or regional flights, collecting crew passports, checking visas and filling in the crew declaration for the authorities
- Reviewing documents from the dispatcher, powering up and checking onboard communications equipment, confirming certificates, onboard documents and equipment are complete and in good order, and reporting to the captain
- Helping the crew with customs, border and quarantine formalities on international or regional flights
- Operating equipment to talk to the ground, passing on instructions from controllers and the captain, keeping communications open, filling in the communications log, handling unusual situations as required, providing weather information and helping the pilots and navigator listen for and identify navigation station frequencies and call signs
- Telling ground staff or the relevant departments how the communications equipment and support performed
