How to become a Marine Biology Surveyor
Official Chinese title (2022 occupational classification): 海洋生物调查员
Collects samples of floating, swimming, seabed and intertidal sea life with nets and grabs, then identifies and counts species and organises the records with microscopes and other equipment.
Main tasks
- Checking nets, grabs and other sampling gear and preparing sample bottles, preservatives and other supplies before going to sea
- Collecting plankton, swimming and seabed life samples by net trawling
- Collecting seabed life samples with grabs and similar equipment
- Collecting samples in the intertidal zone with shovels, quadrats and sieves
- Collecting fouling organisms with test panels
- Taking chlorophyll samples with water samplers and other tools and filtering them
- Labelling, preserving and storing samples with preservatives or freezing and filling in sampling records
- Sorting swimming sea life into rough groups on site
- Classifying and counting samples with microscopes and other equipment and filling in reports
- Maintaining instruments and equipment
