How to become a Plant Protection Specialist
Official Chinese title (2022 occupational classification): 植物保护技术人员
Monitors and warns of pests such as diseases, insects, weeds and rodents, researches integrated pest management, and develops and promotes plant protection products.
Main tasks
- Researching the make up and changes of pest populations, how they interact with host plants and the environment, and plant resistance and how to identify it, and classifying and identifying pests
- Surveying how pests appear, develop, spread and cause damage, and forecasting outbreaks
- Setting methods for assessing crop losses, economic thresholds and control triggers, and suggesting growing practices that reduce damage
- Developing methods, measures and systems to control pests, combining farming practices with chemical, biological and physical controls
- Developing and promoting plant protection products and how to use them, monitoring and assessing pesticide resistance, food safety and ecological risks, and researching and managing those risks
- Developing and promoting techniques for breeding pest and disease resistant crops
- Researching plant quarantine techniques and carrying out quarantine, area lockdowns and control measures to stop quarantine pests arriving, spreading and causing damage
