Cures and processes raw tobacco leaf with curing barns, air curing sheds and tools.
Main tasks
- Finding out how much tobacco is planted and how ripe it is, guiding the building, fitting out and upkeep of curing barns and sheds and checking them
- Judging leaf ripeness, deciding the area, time, position and number of leaves to harvest and guiding picking
- Checking the position, ripeness and condition of fresh leaves and picking out badly diseased, overripe or underripe ones
- Sorting and tying, clipping and loading fresh leaves with sticks, clips and air baffles
- Placing leaves for curing in layers by quality to suit temperature, humidity and airflow in different parts of the barn
- Choosing the curing process to suit leaf quality and setting and adjusting parameters
- Operating heating, venting and climate control equipment to adjust barn temperature and humidity and control curing time
- Bringing leaves back to moisture with humidifiers or by hand, then sorting and baling them
- Analysing curing quality problems and causes and suggesting improvements to growing, curing and loading
