How to become a Vehicle Assembly Technician

Also called: Engine Assembly Technician, Final Vehicle Assembly Technician, Car Component Assembly Technician
Uses special tooling, equipment and assembly lines to assemble and test car components, assemblies or whole vehicles.
Main tasks
- Engines: assembling, adjusting and testing engines with assembly and test bench equipment and tooling
- Gearboxes: assembling, adjusting and testing gearbox assemblies with the right assembly equipment and tooling
- Drivetrain: assembling and testing universal joints, drive shafts, centre bearings, flexible shafts and other parts with the right assembly equipment and tooling
- Axles: assembling and testing drive axles, steering axles, support axles, steering drive axles and their parts with the right assembly equipment and tooling
- Clutches: assembling and testing clutches and their control parts with the right assembly equipment and tooling
- Suspension: assembling and testing shock absorbers, springs, electronic suspension controls, balance suspension torque rods and other parts with the right assembly equipment and tooling
- Electrics: assembling and testing instruments, alternators, batteries, starter motors, ignition, lights and signals, wiring harnesses, and electronic controls for fuel injection, brakes and suspension with the right assembly equipment and tooling
- Brakes: assembling and testing central brakes, wheel brakes, brake lines and retarders with the right assembly equipment and tooling
- Steering: assembling and testing steering wheels, steering boxes, tie rods and power steering parts with the right assembly equipment and tooling
- Assembling and testing fifth wheel couplings, cargo bodies and hydraulic tipping parts for commercial vehicles with assembly equipment and tooling
- Wheels: assembling wheel units with production equipment and tooling and checking their balance and air tightness
- Chassis frames: riveting and assembling frames with production equipment and tooling and adjusting them
- Building the body, chassis, engine, electrics and other systems into a complete vehicle on the final assembly line with tools and tooling, then adjusting and testing it
- Testing and adjusting the drivetrain, steering, brakes and instruments of the finished vehicle with test equipment and tools
- Testing the vehicle's power, drivetrain and braking on the test track
- Maintaining the assembly line, test equipment and tooling and fixing everyday faults
