How to become an Agricultural Engineer
Also called: Agricultural Extension Officer, Agricultural Adviser
Uses knowledge and skills from the natural and social sciences in agriculture to develop technology and help farmers adopt it.
Main tasks
- Drawing up and guiding production plans, from cultivating and fertilising land to harvest
- Studying past outbreaks of pests and diseases, forecasting future outbreaks and advising on control
- Advising on bringing in automated farm equipment and machinery to work more efficiently
- Surveying water supply and farmland conditions and guiding and supervising the design and building of farm infrastructure works
- Testing farm machinery and equipment and advising farmers
- Guiding and enforcing rules on selling and using pesticides
- Advising on farming and on ways to run farms efficiently
- Developing ways to prevent pests and diseases and breeding resistant crop varieties
- Developing new technology such as new crop varieties and growing methods
- Weeding farmland by machine or by hand
