How to become a Bank Account Officer
Also called: Bank relationship officer, Shinkin bank account officer, Credit cooperative account officer
Visits businesses, sole traders and individual customers in a bank or shinkin bank branch's area to provide personalised financial services.
Main tasks
- Gathering information on customers and on finance-related social and economic developments
- Planning visits to depositors and borrowers
- Visiting depositors, borrowers and other customers according to the plan

- Considering ways to support the management of small and medium-sized businesses

After finishing their studies they join a bank or shinkin bank and usually gain experience in other departments before being given this role. With the rapid growth in foreign-owned customers and overseas subsidiaries, language skills are increasingly needed. Being able to speak and read English, and other languages such as Chinese, is an advantage when applying. As the work of account officers becomes more varied and complex, qualifications are becoming more important. More and more financial institutions offer training and support to gain qualifications such as bookkeeping, the banking business test, life and general insurance agent, securities sales representative, labour and social security attorney, real estate transaction agent, financial planning skills and small and medium enterprise management consultant. As well as qualifications and specialist knowledge, you are expected to understand the social and economic situation of your area and the trends in each industry in detail, and to build trust by working closely with local business owners and their finance and accounting staff. Account officers often see confidential company information and customers' family circumstances, so high ethical standards on compliance, information management and confidentiality are needed.
