How to become one
People join an insurance company and are assigned to the agency sales department. No particular education or qualification is required for the job. However, the salespeople at each agency must pass the general insurance agent general exam (General Insurance Association of Japan) or the life insurance general course exam (Life Insurance Association of Japan) and register as general insurance agents or life insurance agents before they can sell insurance. So agency sales representatives, who support the agencies' sales, need at least as much knowledge as the agency salespeople. You gain knowledge through in-house training and on the job after joining, but you are encouraged to sit these exams. Some people use what they learn on the job to set up their own agency. You need to understand not only the company's insurance products but also related schemes and laws, so gathering information and studying on your own are needed. You also link the insurance company and its agencies, so the communication skills to keep in daily contact with agencies and support their work closely are important.
