How to become one
No particular education or qualification is required to start, but the usual route is to study science, pharmacy, engineering or agriculture at university or kosen (college of technology), learn the theory and techniques of biotechnology, and join the technical development department of a food, pharmaceutical, chemical or cosmetics maker. Some people graduate from an agricultural high school and get there after gaining experience at testing organisations. A related qualification is professional engineer (chemistry, biotechnology, environment and other fields). As well as specialist knowledge, flexibility and a broad outlook are qualities biotechnology engineers need. The aim is to solve problems rooted in everyday life, so it is good to always be aware of what problems exist in the world. Much of the work is in teams, so teamwork that makes the most of your expertise is needed. There is also more and more work with people in medicine and industry. There are many links with other countries, so English reading and speaking skills and the writing skills to prepare reports are needed. Computer data analysis skills are also becoming important.
