Workers in this job say a master's degree or university is common. From job tag's survey of people in each job, who could give several answers. It shows what workers see as common, not how many workers hold each level.
How to become one
No particular licence or qualification is required to start, but basic knowledge of chemistry is needed. Many people studied chemistry (polymer chemistry) at kosen (colleges of technology) or science and engineering universities and postgraduate programmes. Mid-career hires are asked about their work experience. You are placed in the product development or production department of a plastics maker, synthetic fibre maker or similar, where you carry out careful tests to achieve and produce the properties customers ask for, such as more strength or better heat resistance, and build the experience you need as a polymer chemist, such as testing and assessment, analysis and writing assessment reports. You may also develop polymer materials aimed at becoming practical products in the future. As well as specialist knowledge, you need curiosity, an inquiring mind and persistence to pursue new materials and products with better properties.
