How to become one
No particular education or qualification is required to start. Almost all new graduates hired come from high school or similar. There is also mid-career recruitment. After joining, you start with simple tasks or operating one machine and learn the whole process step by step. As well as binding, you need basic knowledge of the earlier stages, platemaking and printing. Experienced workers direct the whole binding process while keeping an eye on the overall flow. A related qualification is the bookbinding technician grade of the ginou kentei (national trade skills test) set by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, which is recognised as proof of skill. Binding is increasingly automated, so people who are good with machines and computers are in demand. There is a lot of standing work carrying printed sheets and products, so a fair amount of physical strength is needed. The work is done jointly, so cooperation is needed, as well as communication skills to coordinate smoothly with the stages before and after.
