How to become a Prepress and DTP Operator

How to become one

As well as skills such as typesetting and image processing, being able to work with the final stages, such as binding, in mind is a sign of being a fully skilled DTP operator, and this takes about 5 to 10 years of experience. A related qualification is the prepress technician grade of the ginou kentei (national trade skills test) set by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, which is valued as proof of skill. The job suits people with a sharp sense of colour and design and an interest in computers. The work cannot move forward without communicating with clients, sales staff and designers, and it needs coordination with later stages such as printing and binding, so communication skills and cooperation are essential.
