How to become one
No particular education or qualification is required to start, but under the Security Business Act the following cannot do the job: people under 18, bankrupts who have not had their rights restored, people sentenced to imprisonment or worse within five years of finishing or being released from the sentence, members of organised crime groups, and people addicted to alcohol, stimulants or other drugs. After joining, you complete at least 20 hours of new-recruit training as set by the Security Business Act, are registered as a security guard and then work on site. This training is required not only for permanent and contract staff but even for someone doing a single day of event security as a casual worker. Once you complete the training you can work on site, but the job requires a sense of responsibility. Qualifications related to security work include public certifications set by National Public Safety Commission rules, such as security guard instruction and training manager, traffic guidance security and crowd security. Some people gain qualifications and become the security guard instruction and training manager that each office (or each type of security work within an office) must appoint, and some move from site leader to management roles in the office. Some security companies have promotion exams that let contract staff become permanent employees. You need to keep your concentration so you can respond to sudden incidents while guiding vehicles and pedestrians or standing in a set place watching your surroundings. You work as a team, so it is important to understand the purpose of the security work, act in line with it, understand the chain of command and take care not to act on your own judgement alone. People of all ages do this job, so communication skills across generations are also essential.
