How to become a Nature Conservation Ranger

Works at a regional office of the Ministry of the Environment to protect national parks and other nature conservation areas, and to help people experience nature and revitalise local areas using natural resources.

How to become one

You must pass the national civil service recruitment exam run by the National Personnel Authority (specifically, either the national public service comprehensive exam in forestry and natural environment or chemistry, biology and pharmacy, or the general exam for university graduates in forestry, agriculture, civil engineering, agricultural and rural engineering or architecture), and then pass the Ministry of the Environment's selection for nature conservation staff to be hired as a ranger. The Ministry of the Environment hires only about a dozen or so rangers a year across the comprehensive and general streams. To do well as a ranger you need broad knowledge and understanding of nature and the drive to learn what you do not know. You must work and cooperate with local people, so cooperation, flexibility, a sincere approach to problems and communication skills are important. You also work and do surveys in national parks and wildlife habitats, sometimes travelling with equipment through forests, lakes and marshes that cars cannot reach, so a good level of fitness is needed.
