How to become an Elderly Care Facility Counsellor
Also called: Support counsellor (long-term care health facility), Certified social worker (aged care facility), Life guidance worker (aged care facility), Life counsellor (aged care facility), Life counsellor (private aged care home)
Gives advice, help and coordination so that people who live in or attend aged care facilities can go about daily life comfortably and as independently as possible.
Main tasks
- Talking with people and their families about using the facility
- Handling the contract paperwork for using the facility
- Coordinating with the person's doctor and care manager before they arrive
- Explaining to the person and their family the services that suit their situation
- Coordinating with care workers and preparing the facility to welcome a new resident
- Working with care managers whenever needed to give each person better support
- Meeting people and their families and reviewing the services provided when needed
- Working with government offices, medical services and others when needed to support people
- Driving users and their families to and from the facility
- Cleaning and disinfecting the facility
- Taking the necessary action in an emergency, following the plan agreed in advance with the person and their family
- Holding meetings with the staff involved for new contracts, changes in care level and departures
- Doing paperwork, such as preparing contracts, recording activities and filling in attendance registers
- Getting to know local residents so they understand what aged care facilities do
- Handling complaints from local residents about the facility
- Planning and running training and study sessions to build the skills of care workers
- Arranging student placements and internships, and supervising and training students while they are there

How to become one
Elderly care facility counsellors generally need to be a certified social worker, a psychiatric social worker, or hold the social welfare officer appointment qualification (needed to work for a local government, and gained by completing set subjects at university or similar, or by finishing a training school or course approved by the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare). Some local governments also accept people who are certified care workers or care managers. Specialist knowledge and communication skills are important for understanding each older person's situation and working with others to give better support. You often act as the go-between for the person, their family, care workers and other organisations, so an objective view and sound judgement are also needed.
