How to become a Medical Social Worker
Also called: MSW, Psychiatric social worker, Mental health social worker, Hospital caseworker
Advises patients and families in hospitals and other health services and, from a social welfare standpoint, helps them solve financial, emotional and social problems and return to everyday life.
Main tasks
- Talking with patients and families to understand their medical and everyday problems
- Checking what the patient wants regarding treatment, care and rehabilitation
- Acting as guarantor of the patient's identity when needed
- Advising patients on daily life and medical costs based on their treatment and care plan
- Referring patients and families to local government offices and health and welfare services and advising them on getting the services they need
- Collecting and sharing information on local health and medical services
- Explaining support schemes such as help with medical costs and loans of welfare equipment to patients and helping with the paperwork
- Collecting and passing on the information people need as their situation changes
- Keeping in touch with the medical staff caring for a patient and helping everyone communicate
- Keeping up with the patient's treatment, care and rehabilitation plans and passing on their questions and complaints to the people involved
- Talking with families and helping to ease their worries and deal with money problems
- Seeing patients off when they leave hospital
- Working with other hospitals, welfare organisations and businesses
- Promoting care at home
- Helping patients use services so they can be cared for at home
- Coordinating admissions, discharges and transfers so hospital beds are used efficiently
- Attending case conferences and discharge support committees
- Arranging the patient's lead doctor
- Recording interviews with patients and families, advice given and services referred to, and writing reports
- Planning and running study sessions and training

How to become one
To become a medical social worker you usually gain the certified social worker or certified psychiatric social worker qualification. To qualify you study health and social welfare at a university, postgraduate school, tanki daigaku (junior college), senmon gakko (vocational college) or similar, complete the required subjects and pass a national exam. To work in the advice sections of national or local government, you also need to pass a civil service exam. After starting work you are expected to keep improving your skills and knowledge, for example by attending training run by professional associations. Cases where a medical social worker's help is needed often fall between the gaps of different schemes, or involve emotional, social and financial problems that are tangled together. So you need to grasp the situation correctly and judge problems soundly, and to understand the social security system well enough to read government notices and directives. You also need the commitment and compassion to understand the position of people facing hardship.
