How to become a Guide Interpreter

How to become one

There are no education requirements for this job. In the past, anyone working as a paid guide interpreter needed the licensed guide interpreter qualification or a regional guide interpreter qualification (now called regional guide interpreter). However, a change in the law means that since January 2018 you can work as a guide interpreter without a qualification. You cannot, though, use the titles national licensed guide interpreter or regional guide interpreter, or similar names, without the qualification. To hold the related national licensed guide interpreter qualification, you must pass the national licensed guide interpreter exam and register with the prefectural governor. You can register as a regional guide interpreter by, for example, completing training run under a plan drawn up by a local government and approved by the Japan Tourism Agency. Holding these qualifications is some proof of your language and guiding skills. Guide interpreters often register with guide interpreter associations, travel agencies or guide staffing agencies and are introduced to overseas travellers and groups who want a guide. Some homemakers balance the work with raising children, some older people take it up as a second career, and some people gain the qualification to change jobs.
